ITINERARY 12 - Trastevere, Villa Pamphilij Gardens, Castel Sant'Angelo, Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Palazzo Corsini, The Janiculum, Church of San Pietro in Montorio.

Again departing from Piazza Venezia, we take the Corso Vittorio Emanuele to the Largo Argentina, and from here turn left into the Via Arenula which leads to the Ponte Garibaldi over the Tiber. On the other side of the bridge we enter on the characteristic district of Trastevere. This picturesque quarter of Rome still keeps alive its own popular traditions, and even its own dialect, which help to give it a lively and colourful atmosphere and make it the stimulating centre of local bohemian life. From the bridge we enter the Piazza Gioacchino Belli with its statue of the famous poet of the same name, the author of many sonnets in the Roman dialect. It is followed by the Piazza Sonnino with the Torre degli Anguillara, one of the few surviving medieval towers (13th century). At the beginning of the Viale Trastevere is the church of San Crisogono, dating back to the 5th century but successively remodelled; the Romanesque bell-tower and the apse are in fact later (12th century). The facade is preceded by a 17th century portico, and the interior contains frescoes by Guercino and a mosaic attributed to pupils of Cavallini. We now turn into the Via dei Genovesi on which the church of San Giovanni dei Genovesi is situated; founded in the 15th century, it was reconstructed in 1864. To its left is the Hospice of the Genovesi with a 15th century cloister considered one of the finest of the period. In the nearby Piazza di Santa Cecilia stands the church of the same name, of ancient origins, but radically altered in the 18th century, including the addition of its late-baroque facade by Ferdinando Fuga; it is flanked by a Romanesque bell-tower. The interior contains a monument by Mino da Fiesole, a 13th century ciborium by Arnolfo di Cambio, and a fine statue of Santa Cecilia by Maderno.
